VW Bus Restoration: Cargo Floor From Start to Finish┃ASMR Edition
Join me for ten minutes of garage asmr, this time I'm completing the cargo floors from start to finish!
Its close to $1000 to buy all new cargo floors, so last year I decided to restore the floors that came with the bus. I regretted this choice about halfway through, as each side was stamped differently, most likely from different years.
My multipurpose welder is still a star of the show, being able to switch from TIG to MIG is necessary for auto restoration in my opinion, check out everything welding and much more from Eastwood here: glnk.io/73rnx/brandonsbus (BRANDON10)
Thanks for watching!

VW Bus Rocker Panel FAIL - ASMR Cargo Floor Restoration
Просмотров 29 тыс.3 месяца назад
If five people like this video I'll redo the rocker panel. Upon retrospection, trying to weld a small strip of metal between the two panels was not going to work, but I didn't know that then. The cargo floors came out nice though, looking forward to being able to weld them in after some of the other pieces are in place. Looks easy in the videos 😂. Bravo 🙌
Sandblasting should be a last resort it changes the metal chemical and wire brush stripping is the best
Interesting! I knew it could result in some warpage, but didn’t know there could be chemical changes 🤔
Brandon! Do you have any videos from when you started your bus restoration? Or photos and just do a voice over? Where to start, what you were dealing with, your plan/considerations is what mostly interests me right now. Cheers! Love the rest of the channel mate, keep it up.
In the beginning I didn’t think of starting a YT channel so very little is recorded! Most of my early videos are all RUclips shorts.
@@BrandonsBus Fair enough! Generally the idea is to start with the cargo floor if the chassis is good? My bus has been repaired decades ago in the worst possible ways, so i've lost the original metal, dimensions, and the factory "clues". Doors have been buggered with, openings have been buggered with - its a nightmare!
you are overworking the insides too much. who would repaint the inside of the panels due to a semi poor finish.
Oh damn. Wait until you watch the rest of my videos 😂 I like “overworking” everything
Spectacular as always. What primer from where?
Thanks! That’s the Eastwood optiflow!
Is this the Eastwood roll-on primer, and if so, what do you think of it?
Had I paid attention, I would have had the answer to my question before it was even asked. It's rough getting old.
It’s all good! I’ve used a couple other products and I came back to the roll-on epoxy, it’s definitely better than the others I used. It’s watery enough to get in tiny spots with a brush or foam roller when you can’t or don’t want to use a spray gun.
That bus should be worth a billion when it's finished
Yea it’s tough to put a price tag on all this work
Looks good from my house
😂 my dad is a tradesmen and would say this all the time
Painting...instant satisfaction 😊
Right!? It’s even more satisfying when it’s sprayed on
very cool. I'm also working on my bus. But not with this level of detail... I would like to show you what has already been done too. once again congratulations. good work👏👏
@ 3:05 - The curve at the bottom of the vertical supports don't match the curve on the bottom of the long panel, right? I'm at the stage where I'm about to weld on repairs to those posts but want to make sure.
They very poorly match up, I used a shrinker/stretcher to make my own bottom supports. Check out my last video, around the 4:30 mark I show how I did this!
@@BrandonsBus Nice, yeah from what I can see, there's no way mine would line up, so I'm just making sure they're tucked in enough to allow the long panel to sit where it needs to be. I see also you're hiding your seam behind the long horizontal support, that's my plan too, but I'm undecided whether to remove the support, or leave it in place, which will hopefully minimize warping, although it will make it hard to treat the backside of the butt weld....
👍👍👍
Чувак музыка ОГОНЬ!!!! dude music fire!!!
Makes sense to me 👍
Magnificent. Teach me your ways!
I cant wait :) Let me hook up AC to the garage first.
I don't think it's OCD. It's a restoration.
Muito bom
Thank you!
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to the next video
Thank you for watching!
While I can appreciate the efforts, for me it seems like a massive waste of time of my life. Just want to enjoy the car and not spends years restoring it. Then what happens when you’re done? On to the next? Etc. I can’t just pick one car to restore in this level of detail imo❤
I can understand, it takes tons of patience and practice to try and do a full restoration, to some people it defeats the fun of owning a classic car. For me, the restoration process is cathartic. I don’t think I’d appreciate driving the bus unless I’ve spent the time perfecting the craft of restoration.
@@BrandonsBus yea totally get it, plus if you have the skills already it’s much faster than say a diyer like me and my first restore will be slow asf. I probably would still like to do one some day if time permits
Vertical posts are still veeeery rusty on the inside....
In a previous video, while replacing the bottom of those vertical pillars, I detail how I wire wheel all the way up from the bottom then sprayed phosphoric acid followed by epoxy primer. After I used a borescope to visualize the coverage and conversion of all the rust. I promise if the verticals were veeeeery rusty I wouldn’t sleep at night.
It's those restorations that will still be around in decades to come.
Okay, you sanded away the visible rust. Are you chemically treating the rust removed surfaces to stabilize the remaining rust?
Chain is only as strong as its rustiest link
Exactly! I like that quote
Won't you lose strength & rigidity?
After all the rust is cleaned up I’ll weld/glue the supports back on, they are only off temporarily.
OCD like me
It’s not a bad thing in the restoration world
@@BrandonsBus In for a penny, in for a pound. Nothing is worth doing unless it's done right.
OCD..... but its great to be this OCD. Great job.
Ok...good....but dip it in galvanize
So the answer was OCD
Hahaha yep
Beautiful
It's not ocd to a perfectionist, if you've come that far & did all that work to dismantle it, what's a few more days to achieve perfection.
For sure! It really isn’t a ton of work to pull these channels off. Totally worth it to me
Did you use replacement floor panels?
They were not original but had been replaced by the previous owner. I cut them back out and restored them.
Hello Bradon, Wow geat work on the restoration from the cargofloor👍🏻🛠💪🏻.fits perfect but a lot of work.well.😓done on the autentick restoration🙏🏻.Greetings.Hubertus🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🙏🏻
Grateful for every one of your comments Hubertus, you help keep my channel going. 🙏🏼
@@BrandonsBus My Pleasure Brandon, were are you Living ?? My place is Norway,Greetings Hubertus,
Your bus will last longer than this van with all the care taken to stop corrosion. I can’t wait to see the finished product.
It’s going to be a pretty clean bus when all said and done
Nice Brandon I’ll be watching this one a few times.
3m panel bond is a must!
Very inspiring. Massive job that you seem to have a thoughtful plan for. I enjoy watching your progress. Thanks
Sometimes I have a plan, many times that plan fails and I have to restart 😅 but I enjoy the process and have the patience for it.
Bravo next level resto 🙏👊🏽😎
Next week the BBT order from Belgium arrives to finish off the bodywork!
@@BrandonsBus nice, mine just came in for the single cab too ;)

G'day, A great video. I'm picking up a lot of information from your channel. Q. Cleco's. Is there a size I should get. Or are they just one size. Q. How did the second part of the floor go with using the adhesive. So thanks for sharing ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Great questions. For Clecos, the smaller sizes seems to work better for bodywork. I have the 1/8 size (copper color) and its good for sheet metal even some thicker stuff. I want to try the 3/32 (silver color) its the smallest they make. I trust the panel bond over the welds, its anti corrosive and waterproof, seems like a really good option especially on the underside of the bus. I know some people just use glue and no welds at all. I felt like a combo of both, (second part of the floor) was ideal. Thanks for watching!
@BrandonsBus Thanks for the information man I really appreciate the advice. ✌️
Absolutely a great refurbishing of that bus. It will last forever now... The right tools and accessories makes the difference. Thumbs Up!
Definitely need some specialty tools that make a huge difference with restoration work. Thanks for the comment!

It did turn out nice! Thanks!
thxs for sharing your camera work matches your content well...really enjoy your talents on such a excellent choice of a project
Thank you! A split bus was a dream of mine to restore since I was a kid.
As always, the thoroughness of your methods is most impressive. When it is finished, the bus should be good for many more years of service. Although the home restorer does not have access to the corrosion proofing processes that manufacturers use today, the products available, and which you use, probably give superior protection as compared to the systems in use when your bus was built. I would accept that cars built today generally have very good corrosion resistance, although I think that commercial vehicles don't receive the same treatment as they are regarded as expendable over a shorter period and are made to sell at the most competitive level. Best wishes.
So true! In an age where everything is plastic and disposable, it’s nice to bring back something that lasts.
Brandon your attention to detail is quite impressive.taking shape, just takes awhile.great video.just keep on doing what you do best.be safe.👍👍👍😎😎😎
It sure does take a while with this much attention to detail! But it will be worth it in the end.
Awesome! Have to do this on our ‘68. Does the spot weld burn through the panel bond on the cross beams? Or do you clear those spots before putting down?
MIG welds and panel adhesive don't like each other. My goal was to only apply the glue to half and weld half so they wouldn't touch, but inevitably the glue got everywhere. Best to clear any glue that gets in the weld holes before welding!
I’m getting ready to do this on my 77. The PO put a patchwork floor on top of the original floor with screws and panel bond. Then I came in, not knowing any better, and put license plates on top of THAT! But hey I’m gonna do it right this time!
Nice work. 👍
Trabalho perfeito lindo d+❤
Thank you!
After doing many of these I found the secret is in the block sanding….i lost 40lbs block sanding the 64’ build up knock down build up knock down i made my own blocks out of 3’-0” lengths of balsa wood
I like the idea of making wood blocks for sanding, I could easily shape them as needed to fit the profiles
I did it on my 64’ and 65’….i did not do it on the Brazilian because it wasn’t as worth much to me.. And this was between 90 and 95 when I was buying 13 window buses for 700 -1000$
That’s crazy, the prices have literally 10x for classic VWs since then.
You'll be finished with this project before you know it, I'll park mine in your driveway for second runner up!😂🌴🚎
Hahah yes dude! We definitely should meet up!
I do the same thing on my builds. People tell me it's not going to be seen 😮
It will be seen when the rust creeps through, maybe it would take a while but it’s not worth skipping for sure.
So refreshing to see someone not cutting corners and doing it all properly.
